What are immersive Technologies?

Immersive technologies bring together the digital and the physical world. They include augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), serious/applied games, projection mapping and other (spatial) immersive media productions. The interplay of different senses creates interactive experiences with a variety of applications ranging from simulations to trainings, product presentations, planning processes, games, and art installations. 

Where do we encounter immersive technologies today?


Immersive technologies have been around for a while. We have encountered them in Snapchat and instagram filters, games, Pokémon GO, projection mapping on buildings, or virtual ad campaigns and product configurations. 

Today, these same technologies help companies to provide realistic in-house training, support repairs and maintenance work, visualize construction projects and data in 3D, and facilitate medical therapy and training – for instance to treat psychosis and for stroke rehabilitation. 

In the BSc in Immersive Technologies – the only study program in the country that focuses on the conception and realization of immersive experiences – you will learn to develop such applications yourself and to successfully use them to address real-life challenges.

3D development, human-computer interaction, AI, game design, programming, project management, and much more. All modules are taught in English, the lingua franca of computer science.

Where does artificial intelligence come in?


Artificial intelligence cannot replace immersive technologies, but it can enhance its potential. While augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and other immersive technologies turn digital content into a spatial experience, AI enables intelligent interactions, analyzes data and empowers applications to interpret the environments in which they are being used. The interplay of these technologies is known as “spatial intelligence” and considered a key development stage in human-computer interaction. 

In the BSc in Immersive Technologies, you will learn to combine artificial intelligence and immersive technologies in a meaningful way.

Graduate profile

This BSc program teaches deep specialist skills and knowledge in the fields of augmented and virtual reality, serious/applied games, 3D modelling, human-computer interaction and immersive media production as well as a solid understanding of key adjacent fields (e.g., agile project management, usability/user experience, psychology). Graduates have the skills to design and develop immersive applications for various sectors and to apply the knowledge acquired in practice. 

Field of activity

Graduates have the qualifications to start a career in a wide range of professional fields. Notably, these include corporate research and development divisions, educational institutions, research labs, and agencies. Your expertise will allow you to:

  • design interactive learning applications
  • effect behavioral changes with simulations and serious games
  • create solid decision-making bases in complex systems using innovative visualization techniques
  • use the virtualization of new products for validation
  • minimize the need for costly prototypes
  • use immersive technologies to accelerate the development process

Exemplary fields of application for these skills range across industries and include rail traffic, the automotive industry, the consumer goods sector, the chemical and healthcare sectors, architecture, energy, and education.

 
Admission
  • Vocational training with a vocational baccalaureate. In the case of a non-technical degree/training, it may be necessary to complete preparatory courses in mathematics and/or computer science (decision of the head of degree program).
  • High school diploma plus one year of professional experience in the technical or digital design field.
  • Graduates of international schools who also have at least one year of qualified professional experience in an IT or digital design-related field.
  • Comparable foreign qualifications, supplemented by at least one year of qualified professional experience in an IT or digital design-related field.
  • If you are not a native speaker of English, you must provide proof of English language proficiency (B2 and above). In case of doubt, the head of degree program will decide after an admissions interview.
  • Age limit for study applications: Non-EU/EFTA applicants cannot be older than 29 at the time of commencement of studies.
