Active Assisted Living Research Living at home independently in old age

At iHomeLab, the Active Assisted Living (AAL) team researches and tests new technologies that improve the quality of life of the elderly and enable autonomy within their own four walls.

More safety, better quality of life

There are more and more elderly people, and many of them want to live independently at home. Active Assisted Living (AAL) helps them to do this – with supporting technologies that ensure safety and well-being.

Together with partners from all over Europe, we develop easy-to-use and reliable assistance systems that adapt to users‘ needs and guarantee their privacy. This increases the quality of life of older people and reduces stress for carers and care providers at the same time. AAL also pays off economically: People who live longer at home incur lower costs and spend less.

Technology supports and connects

We cannot change demographic trends. But our solutions help to meet the needs of older people. Today and in the future.

Equally important for us are personal mobility or platforms that support caring communities: This makes it easier for older people to use modern means of communication, keeps them in touch with their environment and makes them less socially isolated. Dementia is also an important issue: we develop personal assistance systems for people with dementia and their families. By recognizing situations independently, they help people communicate according to the situation, interact actively with people and additionally, the user interface automatically adapts its behav-iour to match the users’ changing needs and abilities.

For more than 15 years the iHomeLab has been successfully active in research and develops solutions in various projects in the field of Active Assited Living.

Quality of Life at the End of Life (QEoL)

The “Quality of Life at the End of Life” project addresses for the first time the specific needs of people in the very last stage of their life and how to meet them by applying smart and assistive technology.

RecoveryFun

Novel, modular solution for a proactive, personalized and gamified tele-rehabilitation solution using virtual reality and IoT.With exergames and Virtual Reality, the recovery from a chronic condition, or after an acute event, does not have to be tiring and boring, but can be enjoyable and fun.

CleverGuard

Using "NIALM technology" to detect whether the use of electrical appliances in flats deviates strongly from the usual pattern, and thus to detect inactivity of residents in need of care at an early stage.

AAL4All

Extension of an existing smart home solution with the aim of enabling elderly people to live longer in their own homes. The system is enhanced with sensors that detect activities of daily living. It notifies a relative in the event of conspicuous abnormalities.

Counteracting loneliness:

With «Anne» we have developed a tablet that is now being put into operation as a pilot project - because loneliness is a big issue, especially for older people.

iWalkActive

An intelligent walker, which improves the mobility of elderly people thanks to its electric motor and navigation system.

iSens light

iSens light is aimed at old people's homes and nursing homes and can be installed very easily near a nursing bed of a person in need of care. There, the sensor detects abnormalities in the movement pattern and, if necessary, informs a caregiver via the home's radio system.

Home4Dem

The project explores solutions to support people with dementia in their own four walls. In addition, care organisations and carers from the personal environment are involved.

In the project RestArt an intelligent mobile assistant is to be researched, which accompanies Burnout patients after the stationary hospital stay in the everyday life and supplements the ambulatory treatment.

The project aims to create a solution that enables older people to tell, share and consume stories and connect them through a shared experience.

CARU is a modern communication tool that facilitates interaction between older people, their relatives and carers.
