Biografie

Die Forschung von Elke Kellner beschäftigt sich mit der Governance zur Transformation sozial-ökologischer Systeme Richtung nachhaltiger Entwicklung. Sie untersucht, wie komplexe und mehrstufige Ziel- und Interessenskonflikte in Governance-Systemen mit vielfältigen Akteursgruppen ausgehandelt und gestaltet werden. Ein zentrales Anliegen ihrer Arbeit ist es, Wissen in die Praxis zu überführen – durch die gemeinsame Entwicklung von Forschung mit gesellschaftlichen Akteur:innen (Co-Production) sowie durch wissenschaftsbasierte Informationen für politische Entscheidungen, um bessere Ergebnisse für Menschen und Natur zu ermöglichen. Vor dem Hintergrund einer Ausbildung in Humangeographie und Naturwissenschaften arbeitet sie inter- und transdisziplinär. Ihre Forschung hat sie in verschiedenen kulturellen Kontexten durchgeführt, darunter in ländlichen Regionen in der Schweiz, mit Indigenen Gemeinschaften in den USA sowie mit Landwirt:innen und Industriepartner:innen in Albanien.

Von 2022 bis 2025 erhielt sie ein Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Global Fellowship im Rahmen des europäischen Forschungsprogramms Horizon 2020. In diesem Zusammenhang forschte und lehrte sie an der School of Sustainability der Arizona State University (USA), an der School of Geography, Development & Environment der University of Arizona (USA) sowie an der Wyss Academy for Nature der Universität Bern (CH). Im Jahr 2024 war sie ausserdem nominierte Gastwissenschaftlerin am Ostrom Workshop der Indiana University Bloomington (USA). Zuvor arbeitete sie als Postdoktorandin am Eidgenössischen Forschungsinstitut für Wald, Schnee und Landschaft (WSL), ETH-Domain (CH). Sie promovierte in Klimawissenschaften am Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research und am Institut für Geographie der Universität Bern (CH).

Im globalen Earth System Governance Project co-leitet sie die internationale Working Group on Governance of Social-Ecological Systems.

Sie verfügt über umfangreiche Lehrerfahrung auf Bachelor-, Master- und PhD-Ebene und hat an Universitäten in der Schweiz (ETH Zürich, Universität Bern, Berner Fachhochschule), den USA (Arizona State University, University of Arizona) und Deutschland (Universität Kassel) gelehrt. An der Hochschule Luzern lehrt sie Nachhaltige Entwicklung und Unternehmensethik.
