Studium der Filmwissenschaft und Germanistik an der Universität Zürich und der FU Berlin. Doktorat an der ETH Zürich im Departement Architektur. Seit 2016 Leitung Master of Arts in Film an der Hochschule Luzern – Design&Kunst. Ehemaliger Leiter der Doktoratskolloquien der Hochschule Luzern und des Forschungsschwerpunktes Visual Narrative im Departement Design & Kunst.
Seit 1991 hat Fred Truniger an verschiedenen Filmfestivals in Auswahlkommissionen und als Kurator von Sonderprogrammen gearbeitet, so beispielsweise am Internationalen Film- Video- und Performancefestival VIPER Luzern (Mitbegründer der Sektion Neue Medien 1996 und Leitung von Symposien), an den Kurzfilmtagen Oberhausen (Auswahlkommission des internationalen Programms, Leiter des Sonderprogramms Nützliche Bilder) und am Festival des deutschprachigen Dokumentarfilms Duisburger Filmwoche (Programmauswahl und Diskussionsleitungen). 2005 hat er das freie Kollektiv reservoirfilm mitgegründet, welches von 2006-2009 Experimentalfilmprogramme in verschiedenen Schweizer Städten organisiert hat. Seit 2002 ist er Dozent an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. Lehraufträge an der Universität Zürich (Filmwissenschaft) und der Universität Basel (Kunstgeschichte).
Seine Forschungsprojekte umfassen unter anderem sein Dissertationsprojekt Filmische Landvermessung, die Schweizer Filmexperimente 1950-1988 und derzeit Ultrashort, alle finanziert vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds. Gleichzeitig hat er konservatorische Projekte zu Film und Video durchgeführt: Restaurierung des Videos Züri brännt, Der künstlerische Film in der Schweiz und derzeit laufend die Digitalisierung des Festivalarchivs von VIPER.
Die wichtigsten Publikationen sind Filmic mapping (jovis Verlag, Berlin 2013) und als Herausgeber Minor Cinema (jrp Ringier, 2020), Landscape Vision Motion (jovis Verlag, Berlin 2012), sowie ultrashort | reframed (Luzern 2015).
Fred Truniger is a film historian, curator and researcher at the University of Applied Arts and Sciences Lucerne. He holds a Masters degree in Film Theory from the University of Zurich and a PhD from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich. Presently he is the Head of the MA Film. He was responsible for the graduate studies programme of the HSLU the head of the research group Visual Narrative.
Since 1991 he has been a member of the program committees in several film festivals. He worked for the experimental film festival VIPER in Lucerne from 1991-1997 where he founded the New Media section in 1995 and organized symposia, exhibitions and film programs. From 1997-2001 he was a member of the selection committee in the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen (international competition). He curated the special program Nützliche Bilder / Useful Images"on the relationship of film and science in 1998 and a retrospective of Craig Baldwins films in 2000. From 2001-2006 he was committee member of the documentary film festival Duisburger Filmwoche. In 2005 he co-founded reservoir, a free collective of curators for film mediation which organized shows and discussions of experimental and art films in several Swiss cities from 2006-2009. Since 2002 he is a Lecturer at the Zurich University of the Arts and has been a guest lecturer at the University of Zurich (Film) and the University of Basel (Art History).
Fred Trunigers research projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation include his PhD-project Filmische Landvermessung (2004-2008), a research and restoration project on Swiss Experimental Films from 1950-1988 (2008-2013 with financial help from Memoriav), and Ultrashort (2014-2017) which scrutinizes the aesthetics and the rapidly changing displays of new forms of the moving image with less than 30 seconds. Only recently he got a grant from Memoriav to save the video archive of the VIPER Festival (2014). 2005 he was co-publisher of the restored Version of the notorious Film about the 1980ies' riots of the young people in Zurich Züri brännt.
His publications include Filmic mapping (Berlin 2013) which explores the films of independent filmmakers about landscapes. It offers insight into how landscape is represented in films and how these representations have shaped our understanding of the landscape. Minor Cinema (jrp Ringier, 2020) is the first collection of essays about the history of the experimental film in Switzerland. Landscape Vision Motion (Berlin 2012), is a collection of articles on landscape architecture and the moving images. ultrashort | reframed is a collection of essays on shortness in audiovisual and other contexts.
