Of course, you'll use your first couple of days in the country to settle in, get used to the new environment and explore the area. However, there are a few things you should sort out as quickly as possible. 

Register with your community of residence

People arriving in Switzerland have 14 days to register with the residents’ register office of their community of residence. Typically, you will need the following documents to register:

  • Valid passport or ID card
  • Employment contract
  • Tenancy agreement
  • Health insurance card or insurance policy
  • People from non-EU/EFTA countries: Visa authorisation or confirmation that a residence permit will be granted

Insurance

Find an overview of the insurances that are compulsory or recommended.

  • Health insurance: Every person moving to Switzerland must take out health insurance no later than three months after their arrival. Learn more here. Compulsory health insurance covers treatments for illness, accidents and maternity. The insurance provider can be freely selected (see here) and must be paid privately.
  • Personal liability insurance: While not compulsory in Switzerland, taking out personal liability insurance is strongly recommended. In some cases—for instance, when renting a flat—it may be required. Personal liability insurance protects you if you are responsible for bodily injury or property damage to a third party.   • Household insurance: Household insurance covers damage to household objects (movable goods) through fire, water, burglary, etc. It isn’t compulsory in most cantons (see which ones here), but recommended. Learn more here.
