Applied Cyber Security Research Lab Secure applications and data protection

Ensuring confidentiality and integrity in the digital world.

An increasing number of systems are electronically interconnected: from everyday household appliances like TV sets to healthcare systems and critical infrastructures such as the electrical power grid. The security of these systems is key and successful attacks can have fatal consequences. Cryptography provides the basis for many protection technologies.

We investigate how applications can be built securely to protect them against attacks. Our core competencies include:

  • The protection of special security-critical applications, e.g. in critical infrastructures or in the financial sector. How can additional protection be implemented?  What are the possibilities and limitations of current security technologies when used in these environments?
  • Quantum cryptography
How can secure and performant devices be built? How can they be securely integrated into existing IT systems? How can long-lived systems withstand future attacks by quantum computers?
  • Privacy
Which cryptographic possibilities allow for the processing of confidential data while maintaining the privacy of individuals? How can we protect intellectual property (IP) across domains?

Applied Cyber Security Krinflab

Krinflab – Cyber security labs in research

The Krinflab represents a substation of an energy company and is used for both research and education. It contains a control centre and six substations. The lab is used to research new types of attacks and to detect them. In this way, targeted attack strategies can be comprehended and corresponding defence measures can be developed.

Quantumlab – Applications of Quantum Cryptography

As part of the Quantumlab, we integrate quantum cryptographic devices into existing IT infrastructure. We develop and study secure applications using these devices. E.g., a quantum random number generator is used to encrypt files.
