Biography
Armin Taghipour is Professor in Signal Processing and Acoustics at the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture. He is the Head of the Research Group Waves & Signal Processing, Head of Continuing and Executive Education of Innovation & Technology, as well as an MSE Advisor in the HSLU Master of Science in Engineering program.
Armin was born in 1981 in Rasht, Iran. He studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Guilan (B.Sc., Major Microelectronics) in Iran, and at the University of Hanover (M.Sc., Major Telecommunications – Signal Processing) in Germany. From July 2011 to April 2016, he worked as a research assistant toward a Doctor of Engineering degree, Dr. Eng., at the International Audio Laboratories Erlangen (AudioLabs) in Germany under the supervision of Prof. Bernd Edler (F-A-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg) and Prof. Brian C. J. Moore (University of Cambridge, UK). In April 2016, he defended his doctoral thesis on "Psychoacoustics of detection of tonality and asymmetry of masking: implementation of tonality estimation methods in a psychoacoustic model for perceptual audio coding."
From February 2010 to June 2011 he worked at the Hearing Center of the Hanover Medical School in Germany on audio signal processing for cochlear implant devices.
From May 2016 to January 2017 Armin was with the Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen, Germany, as an Engineering Research Fellow, working on objective assessment of audio quality.
From February 2017 to March 2020 Armin worked at the Empa Laboratory of Acoustics/Noise Control as a Scientist for Psychoacoustics on acoustic measurements and signal processing, laboratory experiments on perceived noise annoyance, acoustic comfort, and virtual audio reality.
Furthermore, Armin studied Psychology (B.Sc.) at the Distance University of Hagen and is fluent in German, English, and Persian. He currently serves as the President of the Swiss Acoustical Society SGA-SSA.
