Overview

The Major in International Tourism Management programme prepares graduates with extended up-to date knowledge, expertise and practical skills necessary to work in the general service sector and specifically in the tourism industry. Our education system combines scientific knowledge and skills with the latest industry cases and examples, which enables our graduates to work in a variety of professional management positions in the private or public sector.

Enhanced employability
This programme combines subjects that cover general business management necessary for the service sector, as well as tourism management. This attractive combination means that our graduates are employable in a wide variety of positions in various service sectors plus specifically in the tourism sector.

Knowledge and skills for the global job market
The programme is founded on a scientific learning approach and combines numerous teaching methods. The modules involve university lecturers from Switzerland and abroad, as well as professional tourism industry experts. Several modules have excursions to companies and destinations in Switzerland and internationally.

Professional experience included
The part-time structure of the programme means our students can be employed up to 50% while studying. We also offer a professional internship in the Swiss tourism industry.

International
Our students have the opportunity to enrol into a second degree on the basis of study abroad programme offered in cooperation with our partner, Edinburgh Napier University in Scotland, Great Britain.

World class
The course is taught in Lucerne, Switzerland, one of Europe's top tourism destinations. The Major in Tourism is certified by the United Nations World Tourism Organization for its high-quality standard.

Master of Science Hochschule Luzern/FHZ in Business Administration with a Major in International Tourism Management

Graduate profile

The Major in International Tourism Management graduates have attractive career prospects as team leaders or project managers in a local or international tourism organisation. The programme also enables students to transfer their expertise to other industries in both public and private sectors, dealing with transport, sport and leisure services, event and convention centres, planning and consulting firms in a wide range of areas.

Field of activity

Entry level function includes leadership positions in product management, marketing and communications, quality assurance; heading the unit of a small organisation, or assisting executives or association heads.

Admission

Bachelor Degree equivalent to 180 ECTS in Business Administration or Management, Economics or Tourism, C1 English

Requirement

Requirement concerning the target language for teaching and learning:
English C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (in documented cases the C1 certificate requirement may be waived)

Application deadline

Study start in spring 2026:                                               For Swiss and EU/EFTA applicants, registration is possible until further notice. For applicants requiring a visa, an application for the spring semester is no longer possible.                                                                                                                                                              Study start in autumn 2026:                                            30 April 2026

International

Two second degree programmes on a basis of study abroad options are offered in cooperation with Napier Edinburgh University at the School of Marketing, Tourism and Languages. Students have the option to enrol for a separate degree options with credit recognition in a M.Sc. International Festival and Event Management.

Duration of studies

This major is available as part-time or full-time study programme. The part-time model consists of 4 semesters (extendable to a maximum of 8 semesters).  The part-time model also enables some part-time employment during studies.  The full-time study model consists of 3 semesters (two-full time semesters and one part-time semester).  Employment is only possible in the full-time model in the third semester of the programme).
