COIL Open Innovation

Innovation, interdisciplinarity and entrepreneurship are essential for the future and an important new subject in higher education institutions worldwide. HSLU develops new collaborative learning formats to exchange methods and best practice with international partners. The DISCO consortium focuses on developing innovative sustainable cooperation options utilising MOOCs and COILs (Collaborative Online International Learning).

In this COIL, Julie Harboe and Markus Graf open their interdisciplinary HSLU course OPEN INNOVATION (TA.BA_OPEN_ISA) to students from Lviv National Polytechnic University, Ukraine. Using their real-world test-cases, students connect learning about the strategies and advantages of open innovation and creative collaborations with facilitating start-up concepts. The course features online lectures on the 360° of open collaborative innovation processes with interactive learning formats and international experts on themes such as:

• Theories of Open Innovation (OI)
• Relevance of OI for design, research, and deep tech industry
• Weighing intellectual property with open-source culture
• Knowledge creation in makerspaces
• Crowdfunding and -sourcing
• Successful open-source business models

In hybrid teaching formats, students and staff from Lviv National Polytechnic University mentored by Olena Pozniakova present their start-ups or start-up concepts and collaborate with the HSLU students and lecturer to further develop their entrepreneurial ideas testing the opportunities presented in the lessons. Eventually, the student teams present individual roadmaps for the start-ups, which are reviewed online by an international jury.
