SWEET PATHFNDR

PATHFNDR is funded by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy under the umbrella of the SWEET research program. The project consortium is comprised of 8 research partners – ETH Zurich, HSLU, Empa, PSI, ZHAW, UNIGE, EPFL and TU Delft – and 25 cooperation partners.

Overview

The project aims at identifying and developing transition pathways to allow a significantly higher share of renewable energy sources to be incorporated into the Swiss energy system. In developing these pathways, the focus is placed on the use of enabling technologies that enhance flexibility and sector coupling. The project will deliver feasible pathways, provide planning and operation tools, develop pilot and demonstration projects, identify new business opportunities and innovation strategies, and analyze potential policies.

The contributions of HSLU are primarily focused on:

  • Determining optimal pathways to a renewable flexible energy system at district level.
  • Quantifying and predicting the energy demand of residential and commercial buildings.
  • Providing concepts and models of novel thermal energy storage technologies as well as corresponding techno-economic KPIs.
  • Identifying and developing innovative solutions that enhance sector coupling and flexibility of the energy system.

By virtue of the leading role of HSLU in EDGE and DeCarbCH (two further SWEET consortia), synergies will be achieved in the areas of building simulation, data-driven approaches to forecast heating and cooling loads of buildings, thermal energy storage systems, and thermal networks.
