Women and the Art of (Self-)Narration
Dr. Vidya Allemann-Ravi (Hochschule Luzern, Dept. Wirtschaft)
Vidya explores contemporary life writing and forms of agency. She looks at how women's self narration asks what it means to take or surrender control over the stories we tell about ourselves, and how much these stories are shaped by class, gender, memory and trauma, and social norms.
We start with a discussion of the controversy surrounding Rachel Cusk's new novel and its apparent use of Natalie Portman's life, and explore passages from writers like Annie Ernaux and Elif Batuman in examining how contemporary womanhood is constructed and destabilized through the art of narration.
