Image manipulation and generative artificial intelligences have shaken trust in the representational power of images and plunged documentary film into yet another crisis: how can reality be depicted when moving images can be manipulated in so many ways? A response that has emerged more frequently in recent years is a renewed trust in patient observation in film.
Conbody vs. Everybody by the American filmmaker Debra Granik—best known for her feature films Winter’s Bone (2010) and Leave No Trace (2018)—exemplifies this renewed confidence in observation as a means of approaching reality. Granik follows former inmate Coss Marte over the course of eight years as he attempts to build his own business on New York’s Lower East Side despite ongoing social stigmatization.
