Overview

The integration of Extended Reality (XR) into education has the potential to transform traditional teaching methods, creating an interactive and immersive learning environment. This research project explores the use of XR in mathematics instruction and examines its effects on students' learning processes and understanding.

The primary focus is on effectively integrating XR into foundational mathematics instruction. The challenge lies in developing an innovative XR teaching tool to convey complex mathematical concepts with precision and clarity, enhancing students' comprehension.

The first step involves developing a teaching and learning arrangement for algebra. The aim is to improve the visualization and illustration of algebraic concepts, fostering deeper understanding among students.

This study examines the impact of an XR-supported instructional approach on students' understanding of algebra. Key research questions include the effectiveness of XR technology in supporting learning goals and identifying challenges in the implementation process.

  • To what extent does XR influence students' learning processes in mathematics?
  • How does the immersive XR experience affect spatial reasoning in mathematics?
  • What challenges and opportunities arise from integrating XR into mathematics instruction at the classroom level?
  • Identification of best practices and design guidelines for incorporating XR learning materials in math education.

The project aims to contribute to theory-building in technology-supported mathematics education, particularly in understanding how XR can effectively enhance student comprehension and motivation. It follows a design research approach, involving the iterative development and evaluation of XR learning materials in collaboration with various stakeholders. The project’s outcomes will provide insights into the effectiveness of XR in mathematics education and offer design principles for future educational technologies.
