Working towards a sustainable future

Sustainability: Making an impact at the School for Computer Science and Information Technology Conserving our resources with digital technology and preserving diversity on our planet   

At the School of Computer Science and Information Technology, we are committed to a sustainable future; we work at conserving resources and promoting the use of digital technologies. One of our two hybrid, wooden skyscrapers on the Suurstoffi campus in Zug-Rotkreuz shows our commitment to achieving one of our main goals; namely, becoming fully CO2 neutral by 2030.

Moreover, we live our commitment to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations in the areas of undergraduate and postgraduate education, further education and research. We count amongst our partners, organisations from central Switzerland such as the Central Swiss Sustainability Network and VENALU. Together we aim to raise awareness for the fact that a digital future can also be sustainable.

First Impact Award presented

This year, the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology presented the Impact Award for the first time. The new prize recognises bachelor's and master's theses with an ecological, social, or societal effect. The jury selected Daniela Hager for a platform that connects women in the IT and tech industry, and Raffaele Amplo for a chatbot that prepares the public for participation in energy projects. Does your bachelor's or master's thesis contribute to sustainable development? Then apply for the Impact Award! We award outstanding theses with prize money of CHF 1,000.

Real-world laboratory for digital sustainability

We are looking for innovative project ideas that use digital technologies specifically for ecological and social sustainability.

Blog and News (German only)

In our offices, the number of workplaces equipped with switched power strips is on the rise. Employees can now save energy by completely switching off their screens and computers after work.
Among other things, our employees get a veggie bag for their birthday. It is a sustainable alternative for the plastic bags used in self-service grocery sections.
Water is served in pitchers and glasses in our meetings. This means we use fewer PET bottles and produce less waste to throw away or recycle.
