News and Events Competence Centre Mechanical Systems

Here you will find news and events about the Competence Centre Mechanical Systems.

Leute mit Seil

Two become none: ropeway cable ends

How do you actually assemble a cableway rope? A real challenge: the rope weighs several tonnes, is kilometres long and the two ends have to be intricately braided together. The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts has developed a method that makes it easier.

Another process has expanded the area of additive manufacturing in the Competence Center Mechanical Systems. As of now, we have an HP Multi Jet Fusion system at our disposal for the production of components. The system is characterized by its simple and safe operation and produces components made of PA12. An absolute novelty for us is that the components can be printed partially or entirely in colour. Due to the robustness and appearance, the components can be used as so-called «end-use parts». Moreover, the powder bed fusion process enables printing without support geometries. This method allows us to realize complex components without being hindered by manufacturing remnants.

NAFEMS World Award to Master's graduate Gian Hauenstein

Our graduate and colleague Gian Hauenstein has won the NAFEMS World Student Award with his master's thesis after having already received the NAFEMS DACH Student Award 2019/2020. He presented his thesis entitled «Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Powder Material inside Additive Manufactured Particle Dampers» to an international audience at the NAFEMS World Congress in Salzburg.

Multiphysics Simulation in Ski Manufacturing

Ski simulation model at NAFEMS World Congress

At this year's NAFEMS World Congress in Canada, the ski simulation model was presented to an international audience of experts. The ski simulation model was developed as part of the research project Industrialised Ski Production from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in cooperation with Stöckli Ski.
