Thermal storage systems Seasonal storage materials

In Switzerland, heating and cooling account for around 50 % of final energy demand. To improve the use of waste heat and match supply and demand in time, we are developing and researching innovative solutions for seasonal and short-term heat storage in buildings, neighborhoods and communities. We are also investigating new storage technologies for industrial processes, with a focus on innovative storage materials

Development and implementation of pilot plants

A pilot thermal energy storage room underground.

The technological development of thermal energy storage systems and the expansion of pilot plants are one of our core competencies. We combine theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience and thus create a solid basis for the implementation of innovative pilot projects.

more

Our focus is on the development of new heat and cold storage systems and on overcoming key challenges such as system integration, material optimization and efficient control. Therefore, we build and test prototypes of various storage technologies, carry out comprehensive measurements to validate simulation models and use demonstration systems to evaluate the practicability of new concepts. Our research and development is aligned towards the specific social, political and legal framework conditions in Switzerland in order to create viable and future-proof storage solutions. We take into account not only technical requirements, but also regulatory specifications and social aspects to ensure broad acceptance and successful implementation of our technologies.

Seasonal heat storage

Seasonal heat storage systems or long-term heat storage systems can store thermal energy over an extended period. This technology helps to improve the use of waste heat and to match heat supply and demand in time, thus minimizing annual energy losses.

Seasonal heat storage systems can play a pivotal role in the energy transition and in particular within the Energy Strategy 2050 adopted by the federal government. Nevertheless, implementation projects for seasonal heat storage systems are currently always of a scientific- nature and the construction costs are correspondingly high. In order to advance the technology within Switzerland and to ensure that seasonal heat storage systems are ready for the market in the future, our researchers are working intensively on this topic.
