Latent thermal energy storage 

Our experts develop passive temperature management systems that absorb heat flows and dampen temperature peaks. Phase change materials (PCM) or phase change dispersions are often used, which make it possible to store and release heat at a constant temperature level. We distinguish between load shifting and peak shaving - two key strategies for thermally stabilizing processes and using energy more efficiently. In addition, model-based optimizations are used to precisely predict temperature curves and improve control strategies. In this way, our solutions help to extend product service life, increase quality and reduce energy consumption.

A major advantage of latent heat storage systems is their high energy density in a small volume. This property makes them ideal for applications where space is limited, for example in existing buildings or compact system solutions. At the Competence Center Thermal Energy Storage, we develop latent heat storage systems with the aim of providing environmentally friendly and economical solutions. Our developments range from material selection and thermal design to practical implementation - always with a focus on sustainability, system integration and performance.

Our researchers analyse and characterise storage materials for different temperature ranges, with a particular focus on phase change materials (PCM). These materials store thermal energy by absorbing or releasing large amounts of energy during the transition between a solid and liquid state - at an almost constant temperature. We are also investigating sensitive storage materials for medium and high-temperature applications, which are particularly important for industrial processes. We are working on innovative insulating materials to further improve the efficiency and compactness of thermal storage systems. A central goal of our research is the development of sustainable materials with a long service life to take into account not only technical performance but also ecological and economic aspects over the entire life cycle.  Our analysis laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art measuring devices that enable precise characterization of storage materials. We are also actively involved in the further development of calorimetric measurement methods. We also carry out material analyses for external partners on request.
