Reader Revolving Histories – on translocal performance art Switzerland

edited by: Andrea Saemann, Chris Regn, Lena Eriksson, Margarit von Büren, Muda Mathis, Sabine Gebhardt Fink (2025) In collaboration with performance artists from all regions of Switzerland, the collective research project Revolving Histories explores the collaboration, Social Elegance and transmission of performative knowledge. Taking the 2022 exhibition BANG BANG – translocal performance histories in Museum Tinguely as its starting point, the publication gives visibility to a practice marked by mutual inspiration. Artists, journalists and archivists have contributed short texts on current topics and issues from the world of performance art. The abundant visual material providing a comprehensive picture of the exhibition project, the authors’ passion for telling their stories, the external perspective and the spirit of involvement promise a very enjoyable read.

Class Chat

“Class Chat” is an exchange between students in the BA in Arts and Art and Design Education at the Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art developed by Marina Belobrovaja based on forty individual interviews with people in the programme. It is an attempt to describe this extraordinary yet paradigmatic living and learning space, in which Belobrovaja herself acts a lecturer, with all its visions, contradictions, need for criticism and love of experimentation. In the interviews, she asked her interlocutors how they would rate the programme structure, what they think its responsibilities should be and how they shape their relationship with the programme and the people associated with it.

Movement as an Artefact

This coming fall Clemens Fellmann will be starting to work on his PhD project at the School of Creative Arts College Lane in Hertfordshire (UK). How people move in spatial situations is a recurring theme in his artistic and academic work. In performances, videos and texts, he understands movement as an artefact – a fleeting object that can be captured and interpreted. He's interested in small, personal and everyday forms of physical behaviour and what they say about the immediate environment. In his dissertation, he is developing an artistic method for exploring and interpreting spaces through people's movements.

Siri Peyer published her PhD project

The Institute for Human Activities (IHA), founded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2012 by the artist Renzo Martens, is highly controversial: While some see it as the artist's cynical and self-serving commentary on the mechanisms of critical art as performed on the backs of his local allies, others consider the project’s embeddedness in a real-life environment as a strident critique of the Western art industry’s economies. In her publication, Siri Peyer investigates ways of integrating the work’s internal contradictions in an analysis in such a way that they are not resolved into unambiguous positions. To this end, she proposes a transdisciplinary methodology that analyses Renzo Martens’ IHA from an art-centred perspective.

In her recently defended dissertation project, Linda Luv explores the emancipatory potential of performance art in the (re-)creation of everyday processes. She is particularly interested whether performance can have a lasting impact on gender- and role-building everyday activities. From her personal perspective as a performance artist, young mother and queer woman, she engages in an artistic exploration of boundary experiences in her day-to-day life. In the framework of the seminar and her research, Linda Luv talks about her path towards a PhD.
