During the programme, you will learn to work conceptually and substantively at the intersections of subject development, cross-platform storytelling and experimentation in film and art. The documentary perspective is at the heart of our filmic work. We take a critical approach to the perception and representation of reality, and address socially relevant themes in a reflective and often subjective manner through filmic forms. Through inputs on Expanded Cinema, your documentary ideas are also conceived and tested as spatial installations and projections.
You can choose between different study pathways:
- for an open, experimental and artistic course of study
- for the production of a short documentary work (up to 30 mins)
- for the development of a longer or serial project suitable for funding
During your Master’s programme, you will work on a project of your own choosing, which can take various forms: these range from a short documentary film and artistic-experimental projects to the careful planning and conceptual testing (proof of concept) of feature-length or serialised formats. The recommended running time for your own completed film in the MA Film programme is 20 minutes.
Independent learning and the self-directed development of your Master’s project are prerequisites for successfully completing the programme. The lecturers will support you and your project development as discussion partners, advisors and critical mentors. Collaboration with external production companies or clients is possible. Career changers with a background in the humanities, social sciences, the arts or other creative fields are welcome following an aptitude test. The prerequisites for this are a BA degree and the submission of a compelling portfolio, as well as a clear statement of motivation. Unfortunately, admission via a portfolio is not legally possible for applicants without a BA degree. The standard duration of study is 4 semesters; the programme can be completed in 6 semesters on a part-time basis. The programme also includes the opportunity to undertake an internship and to spend an exchange semester at a film school abroad.
