About the Programme

This unique programme empowers you to transform emerging technologies into sustainable, everyday realities through interdisciplinary collaboration. It focuses on projects that promote local impact and align with our core values. You will engage with assignments from external partners or pursue your ideas, all discussed in dynamic plenary sessions.
You will benefit from insights provided by expert coaches and utilise cutting-edge methods and tools, gain hands-on experience in various areas, including User Experience and Interaction Design, Spatial Computing, Augmented and Virtual Reality, Web Applications, Data Visualisation, the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning. Our research-oriented approach ensures you develop competencies that endure beyond your Master’s duration.

Our Offer

We offer ambitious designers an intensive full or part-time program, providing opportunities to develop their transformative design practice in collaboration with partners from research, civil society, public administration, and industry.

Our Challenges

We ask questions, engage stakeholders, experiment, prototype solutions.
How might we...

  • foster curiosity and experimentation?
  • invite, engage, and empower people?
  • design for complex adaptive systems?
  • leverage emerging technologies?
  • evaluate impacts and facilitate transitions?

What you can expect

  • Innovative design degree program in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Exploratory and research-driven - dedicated to excellence in design.
  • Solving wicked problems: exploring difficult challenges to create new business opportunities.
  • Low student-to-teacher ratio of 1:7.
  • Outstanding workshops - translating concepts into prototypes.

Specifics for the Master Digital Ideation

  • Interdisciplinary Degree Program: The Colleges of Design Film and Art, and Computer Science engage students to collaborate across disciplines, acquiring advanced skills and methodologies from both fields.
  • Learning by doing: Students develop and test their innovative ideas for a sustainable future alongside like-minded peers.
  • Support for Start-ups: Many students opt to transform their projects into start-ups after graduation. The HSLU’s Smart-up funding program assists them to succeed.
  • Research-oriented approach: Ensures that students develop competencies that endure beyond their Master’s program.
  • Deliver results with measurable social impact: Graduates become leaders in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the next generation of human-computer interactions.

Expertise

Our lecturers from the School of Computer Science and Information Technology and the School of Design Film and Art support students in the following areas:

  • UX Research, Design and Management
  • Interaction Design
  • Design and Development of Web Applications
  • Project Management and Collaboration in Teams
  • Game theory and practice, serious games

Language of Studies

MA programs in Design, Digital Ideation, Service Design and Eco-Social Design are taught in English.

Fields of activity

Digital Ideation graduates operate at the intersection of interaction design, computer science and information technology. They acquire skills in interdisciplinary project collaboration, analysis, and design methods and develop independent creative stances during their studies.

Thanks to their competencies, graduates work in the UX/UI design, computer science and information technology sectors and unlock new professional perspectives in healthcare, energy services, fintech, mobility and urban planning. They create value for industry, public, and cultural clients and the research community. Some join start-up companies or launch their own design agencies.

Passerelle

We would like to make the Master's program in Digital Ideation accessible to as many interested students from a wide range of disciplines as possible. To ensure that all students have the basic knowledge required for the MA in Digital Ideation before starting the program, we offer the Passerelle as a preparatory course, which provides an introduction to the three areas of “Computer Science,” “Human Computer Interaction/UX,” and “Interaction Design.” This Passerelle is designed similarly to a summer school and combines classroom instruction with self-study. Based on the assessment and the final admission decision, a decision will be made as to which areas the student must participate in the Passerelle in the summer before the start of the Master's program. Each sub-area is worth 3 ECTS credits (max. 9 ECTS credits).

Combining creativity and technology through project-based work to jointly develop innovative approaches to practical problems

The “Connect Projects” enable master’s students to develop creative ideas and prototypes for external partners twice a year as part of a two-week design sprint: one week ideation, one week prototyping. One example is the “Connect” project for the Federal Office of Topography swisstopo: the goal was to find new solutions for mixed reality experiences in the swisstopo geodataLab. The tasks of the Federal Office and the diversity of the geodata provided by swisstopo were to be made tangible for visitors.

A total of nine students worked together with instructor Gregor Finger to develop a variety of creative prototypes for the Data Table and other mixed reality experiences for the swisstopo geodataLab — for example, on how visitors could collect data for swisstopo via airplane or ship, the significance of geodata for bridge construction, how terrain features could be explored in 3D data in a playful way using hand gestures or a virtual sandbox, and even interactive VR souvenirs.
