FAQ - Frequently asked questions about the Master of Science in Business Psychology

Business psychology is a branch of applied psychology and deals with human experience and behaviour in a business context. On the one hand from the perspective of work, organisation, personnel and management in the field of work and organisational psychology, and on the other hand from the perspective of the market, consumption and advertising in the field of market and consumer psychology.

Some definitions of business psychology only refer to market and consumer psychology, but we deliberately include both specialisms.

The Master of Science in Business Psychology at HSLU is characterised by a high degree of practical relevance. We prepare you for your career in today's and tomorrow's world of work. At the same time, we always pay attention to academic and didactic quality. The requirements of the Swiss Society of Psychology (SGP) for psychology degree programmes are binding for us. This means that you can benefit from a high-quality degree programme that leads to the title of ‘Psychologist’ with a focus on practical relevance.

As a psychologist with in-depth knowledge of industrial and organisational psychology and market and consumer psychology, a wide range of different career paths are open to you.

You need a Bachelor's degree in psychology or business psychology with at least 120 ECTS in psychology and research methods. If you can prove that you have at least 60 ECTS in various areas of psychology on your transcript, you may be given the opportunity to make up any missing ECTS in modules from the HSLU Bachelor's degree programme in Business Psychology. This will be decided after an individual assessment of your dossier.

Three modules of 3 ECTS each are held in English. So that you can concentrate on the content of these three modules, we will test your English language skills on admission. If you do not reach the required level, we will give you the opportunity to take a catch-up test to ensure that you reach the required level of English by the beginning of the second semester.

We discuss your motivation and your ideas for the Master's programme and want you to be able to explain both clearly. The aim is to find out whether you have given it some thought and whether you are ready to successfully complete a Master's programme in Psychology and specifically the Master's in Business Psychology at HSLU. During this interview, we will also discuss individual achievements that need to be made up for according to the transcript of records of your Bachelor's degree or based on the results of the online English test. A constructive atmosphere at eye level is important to us during this interview.

What we do not do:

• We do not test your specialised knowledge from your Bachelor's degree in detail. It is therefore not an examination situation in the traditional sense.
• We do not stress you unnecessarily. A constructive dialogue atmosphere in which you feel comfortable is important to us.

You will be taught the basics of data science during the Master's programme in the ‘Fundamentals of Data Science’ module. You therefore do not need any specific prior knowledge.

The competent handling of data is becoming increasingly important. For example, customers and employees are constantly generating data that can be collected, analysed and interpreted. With expertise in data science, you will stand out from the crowd as you can use company data in a targeted manner to generate real added value.

Start your search on relevant job portals at an early stage. Search for topics such as ‘university internship’ and the respective specialisms that interest you, e.g. HR or marketing. Also look for junior positions that are not labelled as internships.

If you are already working, check whether your work could be recognised as an internship, e.g. by taking on new tasks. In the first semester, there is a kick-off event on the subject of internships, where you will receive further tips.

Lessons always take place on Mondays and Tuesdays. The three Data Science modules are an exception. These take place on Thursdays and Fridays. Many of our students work part-time. However, you must ensure that your job does not take up too much of your time and energy so that you can successfully complete the Master's in Business Psychology.
