Generative AI has rapidly moved from novelty to everyday tool in education, often accompanied by both excitement and concern. In this talk, I step back from the hype to examine what remains unresolved. What are the core challenges that AI introduces for teaching and learning and where can it meaningfully help? Drawing from research in human-computer interaction, I outline a set of grand challenges, including supporting meaningful learning rather than superficial efficiency, designing for diverse learners and levels of expertise, and developing robust ways to evaluate AI-supported learning.
