Discovering the spirit of doing business in Turkey

During an introductive session in Zug in early march, students gained some preliminary information on the culture and the recent developments in Turkish financial markets, economy, and politics in an interactive environment. In preparation to the stay in Istanbul the students elaborated further knowledge on companies and cultural aspects in  Turkey. 

In the evenings, during lunch breaks and on the weekend the students enjoyed discovering a new culture, a magnificent and fascinating mix of Asia and Europe with guided sightseeing tours, boating, clubbing, a Hammam visit and nice walks trough the metropolis.

Arrived in Istanbul, the tour started impressively at Sabanci University – one of Europe’s best management schools according to the Financial Times 2012 ranking. During the Sabanci University Visit students had the chance to meet competent Professors at Sabanci University and to get deeper theoretical and practical information on Turkish financial market as well as exploring the beautiful campus. In order to give their colleagues deeper insights into the companies they were going to visit during the upcoming week, students held workshops about the different companies and institutions. 

Visiting the Istanbul Branch of the Turkish Central Bank, and Finansbank students met top managers shaping the Turkish economy. At Borsa Istanbul - Istanbul stock exchange, the participants had the opportunity to discover the investment instruments offered, the market’s functioning and the mandatory requirements for quotation on the stock exchange. Moreover, a visit to the trading room showed how a stock exchange works in real life. Finally at Sabanci Holding, one of Turkey’s best known and most successful family-companies investing in various sectors and companies, the participants were enlightened on how to enter an Emerging Market for the first time and how to successfully run businesses in such markets.
