Constants in Travel Behavior

Investments in Swiss transportation infrastructure are intended to reduce travel times. However, key mobility indicators such as the travel time budget have remained surprisingly stable over the past few decades.

Overview

Over the course of decades, key traffic indicators such as trip frequency and travel-time budget have remained largely constant in Switzerland, while the average daily distance traveled has been significantly more variable and rose steadily until the turn of the millennium. However, previous studies of these “constants” have been highly aggregated. For application in transportation planning, a differentiation by seasonality, spatial types, travel purposes, and population groups is required. It is also unclear what role rebound and substitution effects play in influencing the stability of these indicators. To close these knowledge gaps in transportation planning, the project analyzes time-series data from the Swiss Mobility and Transport Microcensus and develops an impact model through an iterative process. The goal is to lay the foundation for a transportation planning “toolkit” that specifically integrates transportation infrastructure expansion and its rebound and substitution effects into transportation.
