Overview
Energy system simulations (ESS) show that seasonal thermal energy storage can reduce the electricity gap in winter by up to 40%. Although the storage technologies are ready, the location, type and optimal timing for integration into the energy system are not yet clear. The WinTES project addresses this gap by investigating which storage technology is best deployed where (spatially) and when (in time). To improve forecasting accuracy, optimized thermal storage models will be integrated into the national ESS to develop storage integration scenarios towards net zero. A GIS analysis will identify suitable regions for the installation of the storage systems and the integration will be investigated using spatially resolved ESS. Through concurrent solving, spatially and time resolved recommendations for the im-plementation of seasonal thermal storage will be developed. Information material will be tailored to the target group and communicated, considering social barriers.
