Overview

Clay in an architectural context is one of the oldest strategies in the construction of protective structures and, in its historical application, a recyclable building material. New requirements in the construction process have led to the use of new binding agents that no longer do justice to this principle. The concept of reusing locally quarried earth building materials calls for new solutions, starting with the planning and implementation of the initial use in earth building. The material mixtures must be developed for reusable processes.

The IDN is looking for new solutions by combining traditional techniques from earth building with innovative binder strategies from recycling research. The specific, modified properties of earth are combined with the potential of local processes and regional building culture. The location-dependent material quality represents a major challenge that needs to be overcome regionally.
