EISCH – Energy efficient improvement of summer comfort through exhaust air heat pumps

Potential of exploiting waste heat from a building (ederly care homes and schools) to reduce the need for cooling and dehumidification and to improve indoor comfort by using extract/exhaust air heat pumps in combination with heat recovery.

Overview

The emerging climatic challenges (rising outside temperatures and humidity) will lead to increased energy and power requirements for cooling and dehumidification in Switzerland in the future. Especially for rooms housing vulnerable people or schoolchildren, the increasing demand for cooling and dehumidification requires cost-effective, easily retrofittable and efficient solutions to ensure a comfortable indoor climate that meets the needs of these groups.
The project aims to assess the feasibility of retrofitting existing ventilation systems with extract/exhaust air heat pumps combined with heat recovery. The potential of this technology for reducing cooling and dehumidification demands and improving room comfort in elderly care homes and schools will be demonstrated and compared with other solutions. There are currently gaps in the Swiss regulations regarding extract/exhaust air heat pumps, particularly in combination with heat recovery. The project aims to develop proposals for an evaluation method and, based on this, rules and requirements for energy regulations and standards.
