EkoFlex - End customer-optimised flexibility management

The aim of EkoFlex" is to make efficient use of flexibility in the electricity grid through end-customer-optimised flexibility management. These flexibilities include, for example, heat pumps, boilers and electric vehicle charging stations.

Overview

These flexibilities can be made available by end-customers on a time-controlled basis to reduce peak loads on the grid and thus minimise the need for grid reinforcement measures and save costs.

A key benefit of the project is the reduction of peak loads on the grid by an average of 20%. This reduction makes a significant contribution to stabilising the grid and reducing the need for costly grid reinforcement. By smoothing load profiles, the load on the grid can be significantly reduced, which in turn leads to savings in grid costs.

Promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency
The project supports the integration of renewable energy, in particular through the use of flexibilities such as heat pumps, boilers and e-charging stations. By optimising the use of locally generated renewable energy by photovoltaic systems (PVS), the need to shut down excess energy is reduced. This increases energy efficiency and promotes sustainability in the energy sector.

Economic benefits for end users and electric utility companys through flexible tariffs (discounts)
End-customers benefit from financial incentives through the provision of flexibility. These incentives can take the form of discounts on grid usage or direct remuneration for the use of flexibility. At the same time, optimised tariff models enable utility companies to develop economically viable business models that promote both prosumers' own consumption and grid stability.

Improved customer acceptance and motivation
A further social benefit lies in the improved acceptance and motivation of end customers to participate in flexibility programmes. Targeted communication and user-friendly interfaces increase the willingness of customers to use their flexibility. This is determined by qualitative and quantitative surveys and reinforced by tailor-made communication strategies.

Environmental and Energy Policy
The project contributes to the implementation of the Energy Strategy 2050 by ensuring a stable and economic energy supply and promoting the economical use of energy. The reduction of peak loads and the efficient use of flexibility will also reduce the need for new high voltage lines, resulting in greater public and political benefits.

Innovation and scalability
EkoFlex offers innovative approaches to flexibility that are based on existing smart meter data and do not require additional hardware installations. This innovation enables cost-effective and efficient implementation and can be scaled to different grid levels and geographical regions. This will generate valuable knowledge and technological advances that can be applied both nationally and internationally.

Overall, the EkoFlex project is making a significant contribution to optimising electricity grids, promoting renewable energy and increasing energy efficiency.

The project is funded by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE).
