Overview

The collective term «myoarthropathy (MAP)» describes a range of disorders in the temporomandibular joints and the surrounding muscles, nerves and other tissues. These may include temporomandibular joint pain, headaches, neck and shoulder pain, mouth opening restrictions and jaw sounds. Myoarthropathy includes not only physical symptoms, but may also include aspects of pain perception, as well as psychological and social limitations. Usually, the diagnosis is made after extensive clinical examinations and additional specific questionnaires. The established group of examinations are called RDC/TMD, or DC/TMD tests.

The questionnaire «CMD-Schmerz-Screener» was developed to obtain informations about signs and symptoms of myoarthropathy (MAP) — without extensive dentist- or physician-led examinations. There is research showing that this questionnaire might be sufficient for a first tentative diagnosis.

The proposed study serves as an aid to better understanding applicability of the CMD-Schmerz-Screener questionnaire in musicians. Our results will be compared with a meta-analysis on myoarthropathy in musicians, although there, myoarthropathy is identified through elaborate RDS/TMD or DC/TMD tests. We would like to show that «CMD-Schmerz-Screener» can deliver comparable results in musicians. Furthermore, we gather information on frequency, extent and types of possibly occuring symptoms of myoarthropathies in music students and professional musicians of HSLU Musik aswell as members of musicians' professional associations in switzerland.
