Overview

Together with the planning agency Metron, this preliminary project investigates the potential of Augmented Reality (AR) as a visualization and design tool for design and planning in a first practice-oriented step. Using Metron's planning practice and a selected case study in Disentis as examples, the project explores which AR visualization forms are most useful for which target audience at which point in the project.

In close cooperation with the practice partner Metron, first prototypical solution approaches using AR will be developed for this purpose. For this the following questions are to be addressed on the basis of Metron's planning practice:

  • At which project times is the use of AR useful?
  • Which degree of abstraction of AR visualization is best suited for which project stage?
  • What must a planning process look like in order to benefit best from this new AR tool?

Augmented Reality has great potential in visualization: spatial situations can be visualized in situ. So far, especially final project visualizations at the end of the planning process have been investigated and developed using AR. AR visualization and design possibilities at the beginning and in the process of planning procedures have been almost ignored so far, therefore practical approaches in this area are missing.

This preliminary study aims to show the technical feasibility and assessment of AR as a visualization tool in an early and visonary project status. The focus is on the use of AR using smartphones and tablets. Mobile devices are suitable because they are well known and widespread and they enable simultaneous use in larger groups of participants in information and participation processes.
