Ursprünglich war die Milchpumpe ein rein medizinisches Gerät. Sie wurde vom Arzt verschrieben, wenn die Mutter nicht stillen konnte. Ein nützliches Utensil, ganz auf seinen Verwendungszweck reduziert, hergestellt aus sterilem Kunststoff. Inzwischen haben sich die Motive, die Pumpe einzusetzen, gewandelt. Sie kann zwar nach wie vor eine medizinische Notwendigkeit darstellen, oft verschafft sie der Mutter aber auch ein Stück Freiheit: Wenn sie Milch abpumpt und lagert, kann sie die Ernährung des Kindes für eine Weile an jemand anderen übergeben, um beispielsweise einer Erwerbstätigkeit nachzugehen.
Die Firma Medela mit Hauptsitz in Baar stellt seit über 50 Jahren Still- und Abpumputensilien her. «Wir haben den Einsatz von Kunststoff nie in Frage gestellt», sagt Erich Pfenniger, Projektleiter in der Forschung und Entwicklung bei Medela. In ihm reifte die Idee für ein neues Material erst, als er mit Forscherinnen der Hochschule Luzern aus dem Bereich Textil in Kontakt kam. «Da erkannten wir die grosse Chance, mittels Textilien das Abpumpen vom Medizinischen weg in Richtung eines emotionalen Erlebnisses zu bringen.»
Textilien mit medizinischen Eigenschaften
«Medela – Emotion through Textiles» ist der Name des KTI-Projektes, das Andrea Weber Marin und Isabel Rosa Müggler, Co-Leiterinnen des Kompetenzzentrums Produkt & Textil, mit ihrem Team und Fachkräften von Medela auf die Beine stellten. Als Erstes wurde untersucht, inwieweit die Integration von Textilien in Abpumputensilien überhaupt möglich ist. Die Anforderungen an die Stoffe sind hoch: Sie müssen dicht, wasser- und schmutzabweisend sein und medizinische Qualitäten haben: «Sie dürfen keine Irritationen auf der Haut verursachen, müssen auch bei einer Brustentzündung verwendet werden können und lebensmittelecht sein, damit die Muttermilch nicht verunreinigt wird», erläutert Andrea Weber Marin.
Im Job, unterwegs oder zu Hause
Die Forscherinnen der Hochschule Luzern befragten Mütter nach ihren Bedürfnissen und diskutierten mit den Kunststoffexperten von Medela über den möglichen Einsatz von Textilien. Dabei zeigte sich, dass manche Kunststoffteile vollumfänglich ersetzt werden können, bei anderen eine Kombination mit Textilien möglich ist. Das Team der Hochschule Luzern kreierte daraufhin drei stilistische Varianten: eine elegante, eine sportliche für unterwegs und eine für den Einsatz zu Hause. In einem nächsten Schritt werden nun patentfähige Produkte entwickelt. Viel kann daher noch nicht verraten werden. Für Erich Pfenniger ist eines bereits jetzt klar: «Die Ästhetik, der Komfort und die Funktionalität der Abpumputensilien werden sich deutlich verbessern.»
