Admission Procedure Pre-College

The following requirements apply for the Pre-college admission procedure:

Exam content, Classical Music

Main subject in instrumental/vocal
  • Performance of three works from different eras. Piano accompaniment is supplied by the Lucerne School of Music.
  • Sight reading/singing
  • Exam interview with the admissions panel
  • Oral skills assessment in music theory

Exam content, Jazz

Main subject in instrumental/vocal
  • Performance of a freely elective piece from a set list of standards and a piece of one’s own choosing
  • Solo improvisation
  • The chosen pieces must be clearly distinct from each other in terms of key, tempo and rhythmic groove, and performed from memory. The performance is accompanied by a backing band supplied by the Lucerne School of Music.
  • Exam interview with the panel
  • Oral skills assessment in music theory

Exam content, Folk Music

Main subject in instrumental/vocal
  • Performance of three pieces that showcase the candidate’s musical range and technical skills
  • The chosen pieces must be clearly distinct from each other in terms of key, tempo and rhythmic groove
  • In the case of Yodelling, they must include at least one traditional «Naturjutz» and a song with more complex harmonies
  • Performance from memory preferred
  • Improvised accompaniment of a simple folk music song or harmony singing to a simple nature yodel
  • Exam interview with the admissions panel
  • Oral skills assessment in music theory. During the entrance exam, the candidate must decide whether they wish to take music theory in the Classical Music or Jazz profile. The profile of the preparatory studies/course will be defined accordingly

In the case of Yodelling, the candidate may opt for accordion accompaniment supplied by the School or themselves. Please notify the administration as soon as possible (with your repertoire).

Exam content, Music and Movement

Main subject in instrumental/vocal or New Movement Culture
  • Main subject in New Movement Culture: Presentation of a movement solo that showcases the body as an instrument or the body’s musicality (2–3 minutes)
  • Main subject in instrumental/vocal: Performance of a freely elective piece in the chosen specialisation of Classical Music, Pop, Jazz, or Folk Music. The candidate may opt for accompaniment supplied by the School or themselves. Please notify the Secretariat as soon as possible (with your repertoire).
  • Exam interview with the admissions panel
  • Oral skills assessment in music theory
  • There are two exam dates: one for the main subject in in instrumental/vocal and one for the main subject in New Movement Culture

Due to the shared main subject, different parts of the exam might take place on several dates.

Exam content, Composition

Main subject in instrumental/vocal or Composition
  • Main subject in Composition: Along with the application, candidates must submit a portfolio of at least two scores for different orchestrations, and recordings (if not available: mp3 MIDI files). The compositions should be no older than two years. Based on the scores submitted, the exam panel decides on whether a candidate is admitted to the entrance exam.
  • Main subject in instrumental/vocal: Performance of a freely elective piece in the chosen specialisation of Classical Music, Jazz, or Folk Music
  • Exam interview with the admissions panel
  • Oral skills assessment in music theory

Exam content, Conducting

Preparatory study
  • Main subject in Conducting: Presentation of a self-chosen canon or simple choral piece with a group
  • Main subject in instrumental/vocal: Performance of a freely elective piece in the chosen specialisation of Classical Music, Jazz, or Folk Music. The candidate may opt for accompaniment supplied by the School or themselves. Please notify the adminstration as soon as possible (with your repertoire).
  • Main subject in instrumental: Performance of a freely chosen song
  • Exam interview with the admissions panel
  • Oral skills assessment in music theory
  • There are two exam dates: one for the main subject in in instrumental/vocal and one for the main subject in Conducting
Preparatory course
  • Main subject in Conducting:
    • Vocal performance of a song of one’s choosing
    • Sight-singing of a simple choral part
    • Simple conducting exercises
  • Main subject in instrumental/vocal: Performance of a freely elective piece in the chosen specialisation of Classical Music, Jazz, or Folk Music. The candidate may opt for accompaniment supplied by the School or themselves. Please notify the administration as soon as possible (with your repertoire).
  • Exam interview with the admissions panel
  • Oral skills assessment in music theory
  • There is only one exam date. The assessment for the major in Conducting is contained in the exam for the major in instrumental/vocal
