The Institut of Civil Engineering creates and communicates knowledge on the sustainable and forward-looking design of our living environments. Practical teaching and research lay the foundations for buildings with a long use of life cycle combined with optimum flexibilty and efficiency
The Institute of Civil Engineering (IBI) is one of Switzerland’s leading teaching, continuing education and research institutions in the field of structures, building envelopes and construction and project management.
With new findings and innovative solutions, the IBI supports the sustainable and future-oriented design of our living spaces. The research creates the basis for planning, building, operating and maintaining our infrastructures. In teaching, the IBI imparts a sound knowledge of engineering-specific competencies; special attention is paid to cross-disciplinary education together with the study programs architecture, interior design and building services engineering. The IBI is committed to the transfer of knowledge into practice and seeks dialogue with the construction industry.

Structural engineers are essential in order to ensure that permanent structures can stand the tst of time over decades while withstanding storms and earthquakes along the way. These engineers design and measure structures and assess possible dangers.
The expansion and maintenance of infrastructures such as road, water supply and sewage networks will be the dominant theme in infrastructures engineering of the future. This is a challenge that structural engineers in the Traffic and Water spezialization will have to deal with.
Building envelopes protect against the effects of wheathering and should be optimized for energy efficiency. Furthermore, facades also have to meet architectual requirements. The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts is the only university of applied sciences to train the engineers sought after in this field.
The complex problems seen in contemporary construction practice can only be solved through interdiciplinary cooperation. The most suitable studens are given the possibility of preparing optimally for this challenge as part of the "Bachelor + Interdisciplinarity in Construction".
Master`s students at the IBI experience a forward-thinking degree programm aimed at their future career. It focuses on research topics such as the load-bearing and deformation behaviour of structures, non-linear finite element modeling, load-bearing systems for glass and facades, and many more.
Civil engineers solve numerous problems on a daily basis in various fields. The continuing education courses of construction and project management of the Institute of Civil Engineering provide the necessary additional knowledge to competently solve the diverse tasks.
The Competence Center for Building Envelopes and Civil Engineering improves the quality of structures and buildings by conducting research into the responsible use of resources and energy and by designing enhancing buildings in an efficient and sustainable manner. The Competence Center offers consultancy services and expert opinions, assistant with developement processes, simulations and material testing.
The experts of the Competence Center support industry partners with computer-aided calculations, accredited testing, material and component testing, measurements and monitoring, consultancy services and expert opinions.
Several test halls with strong floors, a facade test stand and an optical laboratory are part of the Competence Center`s equipement, as well as a geotechnical, concrete and hydraulic laboratory. Furthermore, there are stationary and mobile testing facilities for glass and facade testing available.
