Former Research Fields The iHomeLab is constantly evolving.

On one hand, the centre is constantly looking for new fields of research that can generate added value for society in the future. On the other hand, research programmes are concluded when the researched technologies have reached a stage where they are ready for the market or when funding programmes come to an end.

Active Assisted Living

Ambient Assisted Living Forschung

AAL

There are more and more elderly people, and many of them want to live independently at home. Active Assisted Living (AAL) helps them to do this – with supporting technologies that ensure safety and well-being.

Together with partners from all over Europe, we have developed easy-to-use and reliable assistance systems that adapt to users‘ needs and guarantee their privacy. This increased the quality of life of older people and reduced stress for carers and care providers at the same time. AAL also pays off economically: People who live longer at home incur lower costs and spend less.

As part of the AAL Joint Programme, the iHomeLab conducted more than 20 projects with a total volume of over CHF 8.5 million between 2012 and 2024 and was supported with over CHF 6 million in funding.

The ‘AAL’ research field has been moved to the ‘Human System Collaboration’ research field.

Safe Building Intelligence

Safe Building Intelligence Forschung

SBI

The iHomeLab team researched how networked everyday objects can improve our quality of life, taking data security into account.

Buildings are also becoming increasingly intelligent: as servants, they recognise our needs because they collect data about our activities and the house. But what exactly is stored? Who can access and process the data? And can we feel safe?

Safe Building Intelligence provided the answers. We investigated the specific effects of digitalisation - in terms of data security or the simple operation of increasingly intelligent devices. This gave us access to all the benefits of pioneering technologies without having to worry about security or the use of data.

In the SBI research field, the iHomeLab conducted more than 30 research projects between 2006 and 2024 on how to make intelligent and networked buildings more secure. Projects with a total volume of over CHF 12 million were carried out and supported with over CHF 7.5 million in funding.

The ‘SBI’ research field was transferred to the ‘Human System Collaboration’ research field.
