Using the method of experimental media archaeology, Julius Lange investigates how film equipment might be archived through experimental reuse. Specifically, he is interested in the associated practices and the question of knowledge preservation. Following the concept of “broken world thinking” according to Steven J. Jackson, Lange’s generative and productive process of repair instigates a change in perspective: Repair, maintenance and reconfiguration are understood as a source of innovation, which enables the recovery of a world fallen into ruin. Not least of all, this act of care is a concern for collections, the question being: What happens with objects and collections if their owners are no longer able to care for them? How can the related knowledge be preserved for future generations? This project uses state-of-the-art technology to repair and modify the devices and contrasts the results with their historical, authentic state.
