Catherine D'Ignazio is a professor of Urban Science and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA. She heads the Data + Feminism Lab, which uses data and computer-based methods to advocate for gender and racial equality.
Her book *Data Feminism*, co-authored with Lauren Klein and published by MIT Press in 2020, outlines ways in which ethical and empowering data science can be practised. It has become one of the seminal works on critical data visualisation in the humanities and design disciplines.
In her second book, *Counting Feminicide: Data Feminism in Action* (MIT Press 2024), D’Ignazio illustrates how the field of data science can learn from the practices of grassroots feminist activists in America.
Catherine D’Ignazio’s research at the intersection of technology, design and social justice has been published in FAccT (ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency), Big Data & Society, and Human Factors in Computing Systems (ACM SIGCHI). Her art and design projects have received awards from the Tanne Foundation, Turbulence.org and the Knight Foundation, and have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale and the ICA Boston.
