By completing concrete exercises and projects, students learn not only about different materials and techniques but also about their own strengths and aptitudes.

They school and hone their perceptions, discuss and analyse their work in intensive exchange with lecturers and fellow students, and so develop a fundamental understanding of creative processes, terminologies and skill sets.

A primary component of the Foundation Course is a so-called Specialisation Module, which the Lucerne School of Art, Film and Design offers in the disciplines: Animation, Video, Camera Arts, Data Design & Art, Digital Ideation, Graphic Design, Illustration, Fine Arts and Art & Design Education, Objekt Design, Spatial Design and Textile Design.

The Foundation Course further comprises modules in theory, including specialised theory on the optional fields of study or specialisation and on more general issues of art. The Foundation Course in Art and Design ends each year with a degree show featuring students’ work.

The Foundation Course in Art and Design lasts one year for full-time students, two years for part-time students.

Now, students learn at the very start of their studies about the diverse range of disciplines available in our art and design degree programmes – Product Design, Visual Communication, Film, and Fine Art – as well as about the skills and working methods each of these requires. In our new workshops, labs and studios, they experiment with a variety of materials, acquire practical skills and digital techniques, and discover their personal strengths and particular interests. Continuous work with a sketchbook and logbook is vital from the very start.

In orientation courses, students can choose to gain an insight into the study programmes of the Lucerne School of Art, Film and Design for a fortnight each:

Orientation course 1: Object Design, Textile Design, Video, Animation, Illustration Non-Fiction, Graphic Design, Fine Arts

Orientation course 2: Spatial Design, Camera Arts, Data Design & Art, Illustration Fiction, Digital Ideation, Art Education

Students then decide to specialise their creative and artistic skills. As in the orientation courses, the elective options refer to the Bachelor's degree programmes: Animation, Camera Arts, Digital Ideation, Data Design & Art, Graphic Design, Illustration (Fiction/Non-Fiction), Fine Art & Art Education, Object Design, Spatial Design, Textile Design, or Video. They research, design and work on independent or topic- and task-related projects in the desired professional field. Specialist knowledge is imparted and advice is given on the design of work portfolios and dossiers with a view to applying for a Bachelor's degree programme.

In the “Transfer” module, the students self-constitute as a group. Through democratic processes, they find a common artistic theme and develop a group work process. In doing so, they learn what it means to independently work on a self-imposed task and negotiate the related processes in the group. The module thus increases the students’ ability to transfer acquired skills and knowledge to superordinate, interdisciplinary topics (transfer knowledge), reflecting the current professional role of designers and artists as team players.
Concurrently to the group projects, students have the opportunity to attend and benefit from presentations, talks and input from invited guests.
