Thinking, Creating, Experimenting
In the Bachelor’s program in Spatial Design, you’ll learn to understand, design, and shape space from different perspectives. The program combines critical thinking with creative experimentation and practical implementation. You’ll work across various scales, using different materials, media, and methods. In the process, you’ll not only learn to use tools, but also to ask the right questions and develop your own design approaches.
Four Perspectives on Space
The program is built on four fundamental competencies: Conceived, Presented, Built, and Lived. You’ll learn to analyze spatial relationships and understand them within their social, cultural, and ecological contexts (Conceived). You’ll develop the ability to represent and communicate spatial ideas through drawings, models, and digital media (Shown). You’ll explore materials, structures, and technical requirements and learn to implement designs both physically and digitally (Built). At the same time, you’ll examine how people perceive, experience, and use spaces (Lived).
Learning Through Projects
The focus is on design projects in which you combine these skills. These are supplemented by modules on skills, theory, and methodology, as well as interdisciplinary courses. In our workshops, you’ll experiment with materials and work with both analog and digital tools. The projects range from open-ended explorations to specific assignments with external partners. In the process, you’ll learn to test different approaches, critically evaluate decisions, and further develop your ideas. Over the course of your studies, you’ll increasingly set your own priorities and develop an independent creative voice, which you’ll explore in greater depth in your bachelor’s thesis.
