Perspectives

We live in a digitalised world that produces enormous data volumes every day. But what does this data mean? What does it say and how can we use it to create solutions? Those who have access to data, know to visually contextualise them and to ask the right questions, can help to shape the future. It takes curious people with the ability to reflect critically.

Why a BA in Data Design and Art?

Our living environment and the ways we coexistence, communicate and act are in constant flux. Data and its visualisation is a key resource for the representation and comprehension of these phenomena. Our cultural coexistence, the education and health sectors, the economy and the research sector are just some of the areas from which new issues and fields of activity emerge that we can only discuss with the help of visualisations and spatial data models. Innovative forms of information research and representation allow for the interplay of publicity, economy and science to be visualised and made experienceable. The role of data designers is to disentangle the existing web of data and to design clear visual information.

Is this the right place for me?

The Data Design + Art programme is for people interesting in data as a subject and as an object of design practice. More than anything else, you should be curious, open and ready to engage with different data phenomena. You are keen to develop skills in the fields of graphic design, motion design, creative coding, generative design, storytelling and data analytics. Your way of thinking crosses disciplines and you enjoy developing solutions both for virtual and physical spaces that appeal to all senses and can be experienced through vision, hearing and touch. You are comfortable switching between applied, investigative and experimental approaches. Above all, you cannot wait to develop your own position, to insert yourself into social discourses as a designer and help to shape the future.

And then what?

Digitalisation, post-digitalisation and a demographic shift all define the ongoing transformation of the working world. Not only does this impact the jobs market, it also influences what kinds of skills workers will likely need in the future and transforms job titles and positions. German science association Stifteverband (2017) predicts a significant shortage of experts in the immediate future, particularly in the area of data visualisation. The trends that are data, creative coding, VR/MR, experience and storytelling are also evident in conferences and within specialist communities. However, investigative research to address current issues is also of increasing relevance for society at large. Data Design + Art, the first Bachelor of Arts of in the field of visualising data-based information in Switzerland, is an answer to these developments.
