Business Law & LegalTech combines three specialist areas into an interdisciplinary programme: firstly, a solid grounding in law, particularly in commercial law and tech law (i.e. the lawful use of AI and digital tools). A further focus is on business management and financial skills, including project and change management, as well as negotiation and communication. The curriculum is broad in scope, as there is a demand for professionals who can bridge the gaps between law, technology and management.

A university Bachelor’s degree in Law lays the legal foundations for specialist areas of study in a Master’s degree in Law and for subsequent bar examinations. The Bachelor’s degree in Business Law & LegalTech does not lead to a licence to practise law; rather, as a university of applied sciences programme, it is designed from the outset to be practice- and application-oriented: the law is explored through specific case studies and directly linked to LegalTech skills and management knowledge.

No. The BSc in Business Law & LegalTech is consistently geared towards a broad, practice-oriented role at the interface between law, technology and business. It therefore avoids having to strike a balance between an academic, legal-theoretical focus and a practice-oriented, professional focus.

No, that would be a fallacy: a sound understanding of the law remains essential. You will learn to use AI as a tool, but the legal, ethical and strategic assessment – and ultimately the responsibility – lies with you as a human being. An interest in the law and its practical application in the profession is therefore a fundamental prerequisite for this degree programme.

No. The BSc in Business Law & LegalTech provides an understanding of the operational logic and practical application of AI and LegalTech tools (e.g. the selection, implementation and operation of such tools within a company), as well as the relevant legal framework. Traditional AI engineering or programming is not part of the degree programme.

Our extensive labour market analyses and interviews with business experts have clearly shown that a great many roles require both practical legal skills, with a focus on LegalTech, and business management skills that bridge different disciplines. Often, these roles are also more or less directly related to finance – in which case your solid knowledge of management accounting and financial accounting is worth its weight in gold.

Yes. The use of generative AI poses significant challenges in terms of data protection, professional confidentiality and due diligence obligations in the business world. During the degree programme, we cover the relevant technical architectures – from global cloud services to language models hosted locally on Swiss servers. You will develop the skills to select and deploy LegalTech systems in such a way that the regulatory framework is reliably upheld in day-to-day work.

These computer science degree programmes train technical developers. The BSc in Business Law & LegalTech, offered by the Department of Economics, on the other hand, focuses on the application of AI in legal and business contexts and emphasises law, management and finance rather than the technical development itself.

Both programmes share common thematic areas, but differ significantly in their focus. The BSc in Business Law & LegalTech is primarily based on business law and incorporates LegalTech, whilst the BSc in Business Administration remains a generalist business administration programme, with the option to specialise in business law. Whilst the legal component accounts for around two-thirds of the BSc in Business Law & LegalTech, it makes up just over a quarter of the BSc in Business Administration with a major in Management & Law. In the BSc Business Law & LegalTech programme, we deliberately avoid the term «lectures» and instead place great emphasis on a variety of teaching methods. Teaching is therefore interactive, practice-oriented and heavily case-based right from the start. To ensure this works effectively, we expect students to be well prepared for each session – which increasingly involves digital tutorials and similar methods.

We do not have lecture theatres with theatre-style seating. Our premises are modern and designed to encourage interaction. We often work at flexible table clusters, which provide the ideal setting for discussion, group work and collaborative problem-solving.

Lectures are normally delivered in German; however, a good understanding of English-language sources is expected in all subjects. The «International Business Law» minor and, of course, «Legal English» are taught in English.

The degree programme (180 ECTS) is divided into six core thematic modules: Fundamentals of Business Law, LegalTech and Legal Practice, LegalTech in Management, Methods, Business and Economics, and Financial Management (18 ECTS each). In addition, there is a freely chosen major (24 ECTS), a minor (12 ECTS), compulsory-elective or transfer modules (12 ECTS) and the final Bachelor’s practical project (24 ECTS).

A major is the broader, more in-depth specialisation chosen later in the course, whilst a minor is a smaller, complementary subject area. The four BSc Business Law & LegalTech minors can be combined to form various majors. In addition, minors or majors from the BSc Business Administration programme may generally also be chosen, provided there is no timetable clash and the prerequisites are met.

No. You won’t make your final choice until later in your degree programme – specifically, at the start of the second semester for full-time students, or at the start of the fourth semester for part-time students. So you can start your studies first and take your time to find out more here.

Technology in the LegalTech sector is changing rapidly. It cannot therefore be ruled out that minor adjustments to the content may become necessary over time. Furthermore, we also want to listen to the interests and feedback of you – the students – and, finally, there are sometimes timetable constraints.

Yes, absolutely. The combination of tax and LegalTech provides a forward-looking foundation. If, for example, you combine a finance-focused major in Business Administration (Controlling and Accounting or Finance and Banking) with our minor in Tax Law, you’ll be putting yourself in an excellent position to specialise later on and become a tax expert.

In the Bachelor’s Practical Project (BPP I–III), you will work independently on a real-world, practice-oriented problem from the business world, applying academic methods – for example, in the areas of governance, risk and compliance, or in the implementation of LegalTech. The focus is on solving a problem, not on writing an essay. The Bachelor’s Practical Project applies project management concepts and tools; it marks the culmination of your degree programme and directly links theory with practice. Not least, this is intended to support your transition into the world of work.

The legal knowledge you gain from the commercial vocational Matura provides sufficient prior knowledge. And if you do not have this – for example, if you have a grammar school Matura – the BSc in Business Law & LegalTech systematically builds up the legal foundations from the very beginning. Prior knowledge of law is helpful when starting the programme, but is not essential.

The BSc in Business Law & LegalTech can be completed in 6 semesters on a full-time basis, or in 8 semesters whilst working or as a part-time course.

You need to be in employment relevant to your studies for at least 40 per cent of your working hours. «Relevant to your studies» does not necessarily mean working in a legal department or a law firm, but rather in a commercial environment influenced by law and regulation. We do not recommend working more than 60 per cent of full-time hours, as the programme is demanding and requires sufficient time for self-study. The programme’s practice-oriented teaching approach also requires a high level of self-motivation and independent preparation for lessons.

Classes take place on Wednesdays, Thursdays and/or Fridays. There are a maximum of four half-days of teaching. (Exceptions are block weeks or the induction days at the start of the programme.) In the first year of study, for example, classes are held on Thursdays and Fridays. We try, where possible, to concentrate classes on two weekdays. However, this depends on the number of students as well as your choice of major and minor.

In legal practice, there are signs that typical routine, research and data processing tasks carried out by junior staff are increasingly being supported by AI systems. This «teamwork between humans and machines» is increasingly expected of those starting their careers in their day-to-day work. The BSc in Business Law & LegalTech anticipates this development: you will learn to critically assess AI outputs, validate them from a legal perspective and manage them competently. These are precisely the skills that are becoming increasingly important.

Yes. As well as roles in the private sector (e.g. legal departments, banking/FinTech, HR, management consultancy), the BSc in Business Law & LegalTech provides you with excellent qualifications for forward-looking roles in government bodies and public administration. In any case, Dr Armin Hartmann, a member of the Lucerne Cantonal Government and Director of Education, told the Luzerner Zeitung: «We are seeing that the skills sought after by the labour market are changing. They are becoming more interdisciplinary.» He added: «We are confronted with many legal issues, for example in our role as an appeals body. AI offers almost unlimited possibilities in this area. So it’s a perfect fit.»

Yes, absolutely. This interdisciplinary programme is ideal, particularly in the tech and digital sectors. Setting up a business requires a great deal of legal expertise right from the start – whether it’s choosing the legal form of the company, drafting contracts, or dealing with issues relating to data protection and intellectual property. With the BSc in Business Law & LegalTech, you’ll acquire precisely these skills and combine them with business management thinking (e.g. in the «Digital Entrepreneurship and Law» module). Furthermore, at HSLU you’ll benefit from the established «Smart-Up» support programme, which actively guides and supports students in setting up their own start-ups.
