What is space? A place delimited by walls? Social space in which people come together and interact? How can space be designed in light of the ways people experience it? What form does this take in virtual rooms, in computer games, for example? And when do we speak of a “good” or “well-designed” space? These are the sorts of question that students have to deal with on the Bachelor Spatial Design degree course at Lucerne School of Design and Art. They conceptualize, design and stage aesthetically appealing indoor and outdoor spaces for exhibitions, museums, theme parks and tourist attractions, for theatre, television, trade fairs and shops, and for work and leisure environments. The students take into account how a sequence of experiences unfolds in a space as well as how best to deploy various materials and media, from image to video, animation and sound. From this approach the primary focus is always on human beings with their complex needs, wishes and requirements.
