In cooperation with the Sursee Municipal Theatre Foundation, "Sursee Operettas" aims to reconsider the formation of communal identities on a municipal, regional and national level by means of an in-depth study of the Sursee operetta culture of the 20th century referring to previously unknown archive materials. The project goes beyond the description of the educational function of Sursee's music theatre, be it ethical-moral and/or patriotic, by providing a methodically updated multi-perspective examination of the social production context as well as a digital documentation of the results including sound and image. Next to historiographic approaches to theatre and music, methods of sociology of space, theories of performativity, oral history and music iconography are employed. In accordance with the constantly reorienting, process-like negotiation of belonging to communities via music culture, the project describes numerous different perspectives on these integration processes. Since the results will be made easily accessible via the www, they in turn will be able to find their way back into the process of collective identity formation, and will enable individual focal points and modes of reception contributing themselves to the genre culture examined.
