Do I need a visa? A number of aspects to consider when planning to study in Switzerland.

Students from EU or EFTA countries

Students of the following EU and EFTA countries as well as Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Australia, Brunei and United Kingdom are exempt from the visa requirement:

  • EU countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden
  • EFTA countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway

If you are a student from one of these countries, please follow the instructions for students without a visa requirement.

Students from all other countries

Students from all other countries must personally apply for a so-called “National D Visa” at the Embassy of Switzerland in their home country. If you are a student from a country with visa requirements, please follow the instructions for students with visa requirements. If you are unsure about whether you need a visa, please consult the website of the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).

Although Switzerland is party to the Schengen/Dublin Agreement, a Schengen visa from another country only entitles you to enter and transit the country, but not to take up residence. A National D Visa is required for the latter.
