Options for Companies and Institutions

Our students work on real-life practical topics in three different types of project: the National Project Experience, the business project, and the bachelor's thesis. Each project has unique properties. In the business project, a team of two develop a novel way to solve your problem. In the bachelor’s thesis, finding and presenting a possible solution to your problem is the topic of a student’s final assignment. Read on for detailed information and key data on the different projects. 

If a student project is not the ideal format for your project idea, one of our research groups might be able to take it on as a service project.

Our bachelor’s degree programs

The National Project Experience

The Lucerne School of Computer Science and Information Technology offers the National Project Experience in the framework of its BSc in Business Information Technology program, in which third- and fourth-semester students work on a real-life problem from the business sector. The module spans two semesters and typically begins in the autumn semester or, in certain cases, in the spring semester.

In the first semester, a group of students is tasked with developing one or several solution approaches for your problem. As a client, you will evaluate them and pick one for the students to pursue further. In the second semester, they will further develop the chosen approach until ready for implementation.

If you wish to submit a proposal for a National Project Experiences project, you will, of course, need a real-life topic or problem to address. In addition, you are required to appoint a contact within your company who will act as the students’ sparring partner for the duration of the project and offer support through periodic feedback and by commenting ideas and suggestions and assessing the students’ proposed solutions.

In turn, you will benefit from the solution approaches developed by the students, from their ample time and resources, and from the possibility of further pursuing the project in the form of bachelor’s thesis.

Possible topics:
Projects are typically situated at the intersection of information technology and business, such as, for example, the design of an ERP system.

 

Business Project

The business project is undertaken in the fifth semester of the BSc programs in Information Technology, Information and Cyber Security and Business Information Technology. The project duration is 14 to 15 weeks maximum and the workload per student is 180 hours. The project can be started in the fall (calendar week 38) or in the spring semester (calendar week 8).  Each student group works on a different project.

As the client, you supply the project idea. It should leave room for creativity and allow the students to develop new, innovative ideas in different versions which are removed from the day-to-day business and instead cover new ground without being product or tool driven. Your project idea will be added to a list of projects from which the student teams pick one each. With some luck, your idea will be chosen. You will work with a supervisor to refine the task the students will then go on to solve. The supervisor (a lecturer or research associate) will be appointed by the HSLU.

You can submit your project idea until November or June for the following semester.

Bachelor's thesis

The bachelor’s thesis is the students’ final assignment and therefore undertaken in the last semester of the bachelor’s programs. Over the course of 15 or 16 weeks maximum, the students invest some 360 hours each in their thesis. The start of the thesis is in the spring (calendar week 8) or fall semester (calendar week 38). Each student works on his or her own project.

  • Cost contribution of CHF 1,000 per student

  • Evaluation, setup and training of a chatbot system
  • Social media mining in e-sports
  • Management and resource planning project portfolio
 

What can employers expect?

When the project nears its conclusion, the student(s) will send you the finished thesis. Please note that actual product development is not possible within the scope of a student’s thesis. This means the final product is typically not a finished product, but a prototype, an analysis or a concept. Moreover, the HSLU is unable to offer project maintenance beyond the project period. However, student software projects, for instance, are an excellent way to test general viability in that they prototype an idea or novel technology which might then be further developed by you, the client.
