In the program, they also hone their analytical and holistic thinking skills in order to implement and manage innovative systems solutions and acquire the skills and knowledge required to assume leading positions within their industry
In the framework of this specialization and within their chosen areas of interest, students have the opportunity to select focus point ranging from Software Engineering and Technology to Information and Communication Systems to Cybersecurity and Advanced User Interfaces. By focusing on Software Engineering, students deepen their understanding of development processes, while Information and Communication Systems revolves around data processing and distributed applications. Cybersecurity and Advanced User Interfaces encompass the areas of Security and Privacy and covers new and modern user interfaces.
As a consecutive degree program, the Master of Science with specialization in Computer Science requires solid competences in Information Technology. Applicants are also required to hold a Bachelor’s degree in:
- BSc Computer Science
- BSc Electrical Engineering
Applications by prospective students with a different academic background will be considered under certain conditions.
Computer Science graduates have a wide range of career options, both in Switzerland and abroad.
In the field of Software Engineering and Technology, they assume positions in Research and Development, Application Development, or Continuous Integration and Deployment.
Those who focus on topics relevant to Information and Communication Systems often start a career in the fields of web and back office applications, process and business controls, IoT, or cloud or database-related services.
Cyber Security as a focal point is ideal for employment by companies engaging in cyber defense and the early detection of cyber threats. Lastly, the focal point of Advanced User Interfaces will give you the qualifications to design and realize innovative HMIs and thus to profoundly support the user’s perception.
How would you describe the cooperation with the MSE students you supervise?
I always try to meet my students on equal terms, even though I will have to grade their work at the end of a project. Usually, I learn as much as my students do when we discuss problems and search for the best solution. The possibility to learn from each other is for me certainly one of the best things in the MSE.
What advice do you have for new MSE students?
Take it seriously, right from the beginning, because only then it will be fun.
What are some lessons you've learned as an MSE advisor?
Start small and grow big. If you invest enough time and dig deep enough, you can achieve amazing things. And it is not about a specific topic. If you stay tuned, you can get hooked on quite a number of different subjects, in computer science and beyond.
How do you keep your students motivated?
Honestly? I do not believe that people must or even can be constantly motivated by others. Much in the same way as in other workplaces, key to success in MSE is self-motivation. Therefore, I see my role as advisor primarily in coaching, trying to steer the student’s activities towards successful project completion.
What’s your main reason to recommend the MSE degree program?
It gives interested students a unique chance to be part of exciting projects and at the same time develop a deeper understanding of science and technology. If you are self-motivated, and driven by the desire to learn, understand and create, the MSE is for you!
