How we support the 2030 Agenda Selected offers and projects

The UN's 2030 Agenda focuses on 17 sustainable development goals. As an educational institution, the Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture makes an important contribution to addressing the most pressing challenges of our time. This is reflected in its degree and continuing education programs as well as in various research and service projects.

The 2030 Agenda as a goal

The UN's 2030 Agenda is an international framework for sustainable development. It comprises 17 global goals, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are to be achieved by 2030. With its wide-ranging expertise, the Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture at HSLU makes a significant contribution to various SDGs. All the School's Institutes focus on sustainability. We specifically contribute to the following SDGs:

In focus: SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being

Our society is getting older. This makes it even more important to ensure a healthy life for people of all ages in the future, despite rising costs in our health and social security systems.

Bioscience and Medical Engineering

The research conducted by the Bioscience and Medical Engineering Competence Center makes an important contribution to the goals of SDG 3. For example, it helps people with injuries to lead a more comfortable life and supports them if their joints show signs of severe wear and tear.

Ambient Assisted Living Forschung

Active Assisted Living Team

The Active Assisted Living team researches new technologies that improve the quality of life and autonomy of older people, thereby contributing to sustainable development. Active Assisted Living uses technologies that ensure safety and well-being.

In focus: SDG 7 – Affordable and clean energy

A secure, cost-effective, and climate-neutral energy supply is important for us. Energy efficiency, sufficiency, decarbonization, and technologies for CO2 reduction are central to this, as are the circular economy, smart energy system solutions, the digitization of power grids, renewable energies, and pioneering storage technologies.

Thermal energy storage systems

Heat storage and temperature stability are key to a sustainable and climate-neutral future. The Competence Center for Thermal Energy Storage (CC TES) optimizes and develops materials, components, and systems for buildings, industry, and energy supply, thereby making an important contribution to SDG 7.

GEE Live

GEE Live is the name of the research laboratory that covers all electrical engineering aspects of building technology: photovoltaic systems, electromobility, energy storage, energy management, and self-consumption optimization all work together and provide decision-making aids for engineers, planners, and building owners to achieve the goals of SDG 7.

In focus: SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

Sustainable development requires close cooperation between business, politics, and society. Through various projects, the HSLU contributes to the efficient use of our resources and the development and practical application of environmentally friendly technologies.

Business Engineering

Complex social and business challenges require a holistic approach, especially in times of change. The Business Engineering Competence Center develops comprehensive solutions for a livable future: economically viable, practical, and interdisciplinary.

Resource-efficient circular economy

Resource-efficient circular economy brings ecological and economic goals into harmony. Designing economic systems in a way that is compatible with nature contributes to achieving the goals of SDG 9 and reconciles social, economic, and ecological factors.

More than 4.5 billion people worldwide live in cities, accounting for almost 60% of the global population. Sustainable development can only succeed if it includes cities and settlements.

Typology and Planning in Architecture

Buildings and cities are subject to constant pressure to adapt. With the help of a holistic understanding, the Competence Center for Typology & Planning in Architecture develops resilient concepts for the built environment in times of transformation, moving toward a post-fossil fuel future.

Summer School Tanzania

The Design-Build Summer School in Tanzania/Arusha is a project in which a new sanitary building, including supply lines and sewage systems, was planned and built on the existing primary school campus. The project comprises a building with toilets for around 400 schoolchildren.

In focus: SDG 13 - Action on climate change

Geotechnik und Naturgefahren - Rheindamm

Switzerland aims to be climate neutral by 2050 and to substantially reduce its CO2 emissions. Energy efficiency, renewable energies, and negative emission technology play a central role in achieving this goal. To this end, science, business, politics, and society must work hand in hand.

Building envelope and civil engineering

New materials, greening of facades, and object-specific engineering—the Competence Center for Building Envelopes and Civil Engineering supports the development of new components and systems. This includes, for example, the use of new materials, the greening of facades, and object-specific engineering.

ITC INNOwood

The forestry and timber industry has great potential to contribute to the net-zero climate targets for 2050. However, there is insufficient awareness of the complex interrelationships between forests, regional timber use, and added value for the climate and society. This is where the ITC INNOwood project comes in.
