Sustainable Space Ecosystems Biological products and materials for space

Space exploration on distant planets and unmanned missions outside our solar system require the production of new components and spacecraft far from Earth. The Bioscience and Medical Engineering competence center focuses on the manufacture of various biological products using the latest technologies in the field of bioreactors, light systems and fluidics.

Main research topics

Mondstation

Space habitats

For ESA's IGLUNA demonstration project - coordinated by the Swiss Space Center - students from across Europe have developed concepts for housing humans on the Moon.

Algen in Reagenzgläsern

Microalgea

The Algae Technology Group of the Competence Center Bioscience and Medical Engineering at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts specializes in biophysical interactions, reactor kinetics and modeling, and chemistry and biotechnology.

Mondstation

Life support systems in space

The research group of the Competence Center Bioscience and Medical Engineering is looking for answers to the question of how solutions for air, food and waste can be implemented sustainably on space stations.

Grafik

Biomaterials

The ESA project " Sustainable Material Concepts" aims to answer the question of how manufacturing processes with microbes are possible to synthesize different bioproducts on Earth and on space stations.
