Space Biology Biomedical space research and space technology combined

The first human being will soon set foot on Mars. However, a lot of basic research in the field of space medicine is still needed before that happens. The Space Biology research group at the Bioscience and Medical Engineering Competence Center is actively involved in fundamental medical problems that currently prevent humans from being brought to the neighbouring planet. To this end, experiments conducted by the research team in the Columbus module on the ISS are examined in zero gravity.

Biological life support systems in space

Biological life support systems are essential for manned space travel. Our experts develop and test life support systems for space applications and experiments and launch them into orbit.

Sustainable Space Ecosystems

The focus is on bioreactors that can be used on earth and in space. Of central interest to the research team at the Biosciene and Medical Engineering Competence Center is the production of biofuels and industrial building materials.

Gravitational biology

The Space Biology group of our competence center investigates how gravity influences living organisms and changes biological functions. Various scientific platforms are used for this purpose.
