Wind Engineering 

The precise determination of wind effetcs is crucial for economical and sustainable structural design. CCGH+IB investigates airflow, wind loads and vibrations to produce accurate analyses for facades.

New materials and digital calculation methods enable increasingly slender load-bearing structures, facades and solar shading systems. 

For a realistic assessment of, for example, wind loads on green cable facades or wind-induced vibrations, CCGH+IB uses numerical flow simulations (CFD), wind tunnel tests and experimental investigatios. This allows the institute to provide building owners, design teams and industry partners with well-founded insights into wind effetcs on building envelopes. Where required, the analyses are supportted by additional specialist fields at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Numerical flow simulation (CFD)

The growing complexity of modern building envelopes makes numerical simulations in a virtual wind tunnel indispensable. Using CFD analyses (Computational Fluid Dynamics), CCGH+IB, in cooperation with CC FNUM, provides comprehensive assessments of the effects of wind on facade elements and solar shading systems. 

Green facades

CCGH+IB investigates the forces acting on the load-bearing structures of green facades using specialised test rigs, wind tunnels and CFD simulations. In addition, the physical effects of green facades on buildings are analysed, such as shading and its influence on cooling loads, thermal protection provided by different climbing plant species, and their contribution to reducing the energy consumption of buildings.
