Reflecting on the New European Bauhaus

Prof. Sabine Junginger, PhD, was invited to give a keynote address at the eighth EIMAD conference, which took place from July 7th to 9th, 2022 in Castelo Branco, Portugal. In the past, design came into focus when people realized that their existing values, beliefs, norms and behaviors no longer met the needs of society and the individual.

New European Bauhaus

It is no coincidence that the original Bauhaus offered rigorous design education amid the uncertainties of the Weimar Republic and that the Ulm School of Design (HFG) created new possibilities for the future after the end of the Nazi regime. When nothing seems to be the same anymore and when the status quo is no longer tenable, the way we conceive, plan, develop and implement new paths into the unknown takes on new meaning. We move from probabilities to possibilities. The New European Bauhaus is also emerging in the context of a newly experienced VUCA world - a world full of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. How will this initiative serve us? How will it prepare design practitioners and design researchers to contribute to society?
